Icon Writing – A Work of God
Icons are more than just religious images; they are considered “windows to heaven,” means by which the sacred becomes visible to man. In the Eastern Christian tradition, icons are not “painted” but “written,” for they visually convey the Word of God, just as the Scriptures do through text.
Every color, every gesture, and every element in an icon has a profound theological meaning. The true author of an icon is God. The iconographer is merely a faithful copyist, just as monks in the Middle Ages copied the Holy Scriptures. He does not create something new, but reproduces an eternal reality, serving as an instrument in the transmission of divine revelation through sacred art.

According to tradition, this is the oldest written image of Our Lady. She is also known as the protector of life and the victor in battles. Invoked in difficult times, she never abandons those who ask for her intercession.
The love of Pope John Paul II, also Polish, is well known. He always meditated and prayed in front of the Black Madonna in Jasna Góra and lived by his motto: “Totus tuus ego sum, Maria, et omnia mea tua sunt”, which means: “I am all yours, Mary, and all that is mine is yours”. He demonstrated his love and devotion from the beginning of his Pontificate, even adding an additional mystery to the rosary, the Luminous Mystery.

Francisco Villareal was just a young student trying to get ahead, when he read in a local newspaper that the government was offering scholarships to learn art in Poland. Without knowing the language and only with the notion that it was a communist country, he undertook the trip. It was a challenge that he was not going to let go. He was professor - founder of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito where he worked for 30 years.
